Worked example
This example uses the same calculation as the form. Enter your values and select “Calculate” to see your result.
Example inputs
- Selling price: 1000
- Variable cost per unit: 600
- Discount rate: 20
Example result
- Contribution before discount: RUB 400
- Contribution after discount: RUB 200
- Discount multiplier: 2×
- Additional contribution required: 100%
- The volume multiplier compares contribution before and after the discount.
- If discounted contribution is zero or negative, preserving the earlier contribution through volume is impossible.
- Required growth is based on contribution; even a small discount can require a multiple increase in sales.
- If contribution after the discount is not positive, higher volume cannot restore the previous contribution.
Formulas and units
discountedPrice = price × (1 − discountRate)— Selling price after applying the discount rate.newContribution = discountedPrice − unitVariableCost— Contribution per unit after the discount.requiredVolumeMultiplier = oldContribution / newContribution— Sales volume multiplier needed after a discount to preserve contribution.requiredSalesGrowth = (requiredVolumeMultiplier − 1) × 100%— Sales growth required to preserve the original contribution.
